Slow Train to Immortality

- is the fanthology collecting writing and art by British sf fans in sf fanzines from the 15 years since a similar publication was last compiled. Edited by Claire Brialey, Randy Byers and Mark Plummer, it contains 98 A4 pages of insight and humour (both written and drawn) about sf, the British fan scene, and life in general.

Claire and Mark are widely known as co-editors of Banana Wings, one of the best fanzines to come out of the UK over the past 15 years, as well as being two of the finest writers in British fandom today (as evidenced by the numerous awards they and their fanzine have accumulated over the years). Randy Byers is co-editor of the Seattle based fanzine Chunga, which like Banana Wings has been nominated for a Hugo and won the Fanzine Activity Achievement Award.

The production of Slow Train to Immortality was supported by Corflu Cobalt, the 27th in the Corflu series of worldwide (but usually American) conventions for sf fanzine fans. Attending and supporting members of Corflu Cobalt received copies free with their membership packs, but we knew that others might be interested, and produced spare copies. It is a fine production, perfect-bound.

These are now for sale, and proceeds will go towards three good causes: (1) ensuring future Corflus are financially sound; (2) the Corflu Fifty, the fan fund specifically set up to enable one deserving fan to attend each Corflu who would otherwise be unable to make the trip; and (3) the League of Fan Funds, the umbrella organisation which supports traditional fan funds such as TAFF (the Transatlantic Fan Fund) and its sister funds.

Corflu Cobalt T-Shirts

Corflu Cobalt has continued the long tradition of producing a Corflu commemorative T-shirt – in fact, we did two! Based on a cartoon by Harry Bell encased in a design by Graham Charnock, the Arthurian knight links us to our host city of Winchester, and his beanie and cheerful greeting reflect the fannish spirit. Many thanks to Madison and Hugo Jackson for modelling the shirts for us (photo by Rob Jackson).

You have your choice of a long-sleeved shirt on a navy background, or short-sleeved on a royal blue background. Many of the shirts sold during Corflu Cobalt itself, so sadly, not all sizes are available any more. Currently we have L, XL and XXL in the long-sleeved, and XL and XXL in the short-sleeved. Email [email protected] to ask about availability before sending money. (A few people ordered online via the Virtual Consuite during the convention itself; we have your shirts kept by for you on receipt of payment.)

Prices before postage are £10 for the short-sleeved and £15 for the long-sleeved shirts, whatever size. With postage (£1.00 in UK, or £4.00 airmail to USA) and conversion to dollars, this comes to £11 or £16 for short or long sleeved shirts respectively for UK purchasers, and $22 or $30 for short or long sleeved shirts respectively for US purchasers. From other countries please email for a quote.
